New Windows snapshot
by Allin Cottrell
I haven't put up a Windows snapshot in a while, but I'm now
putting one in place. This already has the version number 1.6.2
but it should be considered a "release candidate".

Suggestion for implementing bootstrap GUI in gretl
by Andreas Karlsson
Dear gretl developers,
When I am teaching ordinary least squares, I think that it is important that the
normality assumption should be tested. This is easily done in gretl with the
nice normality test that is easily accessible after running the OLS regression
model.
When the normality assumption is rejected, I would like to suggest to my student
to use bootstrap to calculate confidence intervals and p-values instead.
However, most students have no experience of programming at all, which make it
hard for them to perform the bootstrap calculations on their own. They
therefore need an easy to use point-and-click GUI to be able to perform the
necessary bootstrap calculations.
My suggestion is that in the OLS output window a new menu entry Analysis ->
Bootstrap
is included, where the user can choose to perform bootstrap
calculations for the model by clicking on check boxes, radio buttons, etc.
I think that the user should have access to the following bootstrap choices:
* Choice between residual bootstrap (resampling the residuals) and paired
bootstrap (resampling the pair y,x)
* Choice of number of bootstrap resamples
* Choice of calculating p-values for each explanatory variable
* Choice of calculating 95% confidence intervals for each explanatory variable
Easily accessible bootstrap calculations are (at least to my knowledge) not
accessible form other major GUI statistical soft wares like SPSS, MINITAB,
etc., so I think that this should be very useful for many persons and be an
incentive to using gretl. It could be close to a killer application.
Thanks for great software, and I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Best regards,
Andreas Karlsson

Queries on GMM in Gretl 1.6.1
by Al Leong
Hi
I tried the example 17.2 (TSLS via GMM) and Example
17.4(CAPM estimation) in the manual and found that the
gmm segment does not seem to work.
Here is an example:
? gmm e=lpackpc - b0 - b1*lravgprs -b2*lperinc
? orthog e; Z
Syntax error in command line
Your advice, please.
Thank you.

Importing R format files to gretl?
by Andreas Karlsson
Hi,
Some weeks ago I suggested including a possibility in gretl to import R format
files. I would find this very useful. Have you had time to consider this, and
what is the conclusion?
Best regards,

RE: [Gretl-users] inactive commands
by Andreas Karlsson
Hi,
You have to select two variables in the variable list (Ctrl+Left mouse button)
to activate them.
To the developers: Maybe it would be better if you could construct a GUI
dialogue, somewhat like the GUI dialogues for model selections (like for OLS)
for selecting the variables instead? It would be more intuitive and easier for
a user to understand how to select the variables.

Andreas

Note to translators
by Allin Cottrell
I plan to release gretl 1.6.2 fairly soon, with several bug fixes
and a few new features relative to 1.6.1. To that end I've
updated gretl.pot in CVS, and also sent a message regarding the
new .pot file to IRO (something I forgot to do for 1.6.1, sorry).

inactive commands
by javier garcia enriquez
Hi Allin;
I wanted to comment you that, in my Gretl 1.6.1, the correlation matrix, cross tabulation, main components, Mahalanobis distance and cross correlogram are always inactive, independently of the type of data set I have (time series, cross section or panel data), is there any problem with it?? Maybe is necessary install any specific program to complete Gretl (like TRAMO or ARIMA X12)

suggestion for forecast plot
by John Paravantis
Allin,
Earlier today I ran ARIMA and bumped in the following graphics issue.
After my model was estimated, I elected to carry out automatic forecasts
and got the prediction graph and the output window. Then I tried to COPY
the graph in monochrome.
When I pasted it to Word, I found out the -in monochrome mode- both
PLUSES (+) and Xs (X) are translated to the same symbol (X I think).
This is misleading. Can you correct it?
Incidentally the graph copies correctly in color mode.
Best regards

Gretl is not working on my Mac.
by Abhijit Sharma
Hello
I tried the new version of Gretl fo rmac
(gretl.dmg1.6.1) on my mac, but I got this message:

X11 is definitely installed.
Any ideas about what I should do about dyld to make
gretl work?
Thanks in advance!
