odd behavior of smpl command
by Franck Nadaud
Hello listers ! greetings from Paris !
Let me submit an oddity using smpl in a script.
I am currently replicating results from a paper to verify my code (and
numerical results). While following the procedure of the paper in my script, I
reset the sample range using the smpl command.
However, when I reset to the full sample, the script does not do the
computations on the full range but on the restricted range whatever ! Even
while gretl GUI displays the range to be the full range !
Seems rather odd nope ? I use 1.7.9 under win XP (french interface)
Here is the data and the script (apologize for the french but the code shall
be clear).
thanx for the help !
cheers
Franck

dashed lines
by Sven Schreiber
Hi,
recently there has been some talk about how it would be nice if it were
possible to get dashed lines in graphs, but it seems it's not so easy to
implement due to some technical reasons in gnuplot.
So I would like to ask the list if anybody knows any tricks how to get
dashed lines anyway, presumably by hacking the gnuplot plot commands. I
have tried to get the information from the gnuplot manual, but have
failed so far. My preference would be using the pdf "terminal" as it
seems to be called in gnuplot jargon.
Any help is appreciated.
thanks,
sven

new things in CVS
by Allin Cottrell
Hello all,
A couple of new things to note in CVS, and also in the snapshots
for Windows
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/gretl_install.exe
and OS X
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/gretl.dmg
1) You can add a line, defined via a formula, to a gretl/gnuplot
graph. Right click on the graph and choose "Edit", then select
the "Lines" tab. You should find a button labeled "Add line...",
below the currently-present lines. If you click on that you get a
dialog box in which you can specify a new line.
2) Scalars: there is now an icon in the "Icon view" window which
leads you to any defined scalars and/or allows you to define a
scalar variable. By right-clicking on this icon you also get the
option of copying any existing scalars to the clipboard in
comma-separated format. And when you edit a scalar within the
scalars spreadsheet, you can enter a formula (starting with '=')
rather than a simple numerical value. E.g. start editing a scalar
and type "=pi".
For translators: the strings associated with these new options are
marked for translation and are present in the CVS version of
gretl.pot.

NLS in GUI estimation problems
by arekw
When i try to use the NLS in the GUI (Windows XP) in 1.7.9
(2008-09-28) i obtain the message (in Polish): "Maksymalna długość
lini polecenia przekracza (8192 bajty)", in English (trans): "The
maximal length of the command line exceeds 8192 bytes" and produces no
output. In the console the nls command is working fine.

stata REPLACE command
by Irwin, James R
Hi folks. What is the GRETL translation of the command "REPLACE ... IF"
in STATA?
Specifically, in STATA I would use REPLACE W=. IF L==0 to
change my data in STATA (making the variable W missing if the variable L
is zero).
Messing around in GRETL I have come up with the following 3 lines:
smpl L=0 --restrict
genr W=NA
smpl --full
Is there a simpler/briefer way to do this is GRETL? Maybe using IF?
Thanks for any suggestions -- jim irwin (economic historian, moving from
STATA to GRETL).

Seeking exposition on quasi-Newton methods
by Frank Benford
I'm looking for a clear exposition of the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) and
Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) methods to find a maximizer or
minimizer of a function. My current sources of information on these methods
are (1) Greene's "Econometric Analysis" (3rd edition), (2) Dahlquist and
Bjorck's "Numerical Methods," and (3) Wikipedia. There seems to be some
inconsistency between these 3 expositions. Partly it's because the formulas
for maximization differ from the formulas for minimization. Minimizing f is
equivalent to maximizing minus f, and I should be able to use this principle
to derive the formulas for minimization from those for maximization (or vice
versa). However, I'm still getting sign inconsistencies when I carry this
program through. The local libraries are of limited usefulness for this
matter, so I'm hoping someone on this list has a clear exposition of these
methods in PDF form (or MS Word, or EXP) and can send it to me as an
attachment.
Thanks,
Frank Benford
