Hello all,
A couple of new things to note in CVS, and also in the snapshots
for Windows
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/gretl_install.exe
and OS X

1) You can add a line, defined via a formula, to a gretl/gnuplot
graph. Right click on the graph and choose "Edit", then select
the "Lines" tab. You should find a button labeled "Add line...",
below the currently-present lines. If you click on that you get a
dialog box in which you can specify a new line.
2) Scalars: there is now an icon in the "Icon view" window which
leads you to any defined scalars and/or allows you to define a
scalar variable. By right-clicking on this icon you also get the
option of copying any existing scalars to the clipboard in
comma-separated format. And when you edit a scalar within the
scalars spreadsheet, you can enter a formula (starting with '=')
rather than a simple numerical value. E.g. start editing a scalar
and type "=pi".
For translators: the strings associated with these new options are
marked for translation and are present in the CVS version of
gretl.pot.

Thanks very much for these. Here are a few issues I encountered:
1)- I updated the tr.po file, however I think there is something wrong
with entry #1095. It doesn't allow touching the "80% o" part "80%
of..."
2)- Adding a line feature is very promising but it needs some refinements:
a)- In the "add line" window, formula comes first, but in the
"plot controls" window, the "legend" item comes first. It would be
better if this was consistent so that the user won't enter the formula
in the wrong field vice-versa while adding or modifying.
b)- Open Gujarati Table_1.3.gdt and plot France versus Germany.
When I enter the formula "7,5" I get 2 horizontal lines passing
through 7 and 5. The first line somehow has the legend "7" and both of
the lines are green. Entering "7.5" in the formula field however gives
the desired line.
c)- Using the same data set, I plot Canada versus France (France
on the x axis). Somehow I cannot add a horizonta line (such as "1.3")
on this graph (but I was able to plot "x" (45 degree line) and see it
after modifying the ranges).

Also, could it be so that we could also add dashed lines etc? Well,
ahem, also, ahem, could the colors of the lines after the second line
be settable as well, by any chance?

Now that Talha has openly pronounced these feature requests I must say
these have been on my wishlist as well for some time already, and I
constantly (well, not really, let's say repeatedly) struggle with the
workarounds.
I found that setting the colors for the lines beyond no. 3 is
_relatively_ easy by editing the gnuplot plot commands. (Save graph to
session as icon -> right-click icon in session window and select edit
plot commands.) But still you need some knowledge of how the colors you
want are encoded.
For the dashes I really haven't found any workaround either, gnuplot (or
the pdf backend, whatever) strikes me as not very user-friendly there.
That's why I was so interested the other day in using R as a graphing
backend via the new R script feature in gretl. The gnuplot integration
in gretl is a remarkable achievement and is good enough for many things,
but not for all of my graphical needs, frankly. What I don't know of
course, is whether the way to go is to refine the gnuplot link or to
push the R integration.

IMHO the way to go is to refine the gnuplot link. Although R is good in
many ways, it is very slow. gnuplot, being programmed in C, should be
considerably faster. While I think it is good to be able to run R from
inside gretl, gretl should not depend on R for its built-in procedures,
e.g. graphing.

I've increased the number of user-settable line colors to 6 in
gretl's gnuplot controller. Selecting dash patterns is trickier
because of differences between gnuplot 'terminal' types, but that
may follow.

Thanks very much for these. I am most grateful for the new features as
I am currently using plots generated using gretl along with the LaTeX
Beamer class to create very, very fancy looking econometrics lecture
notes in Turkish. I have distributon graphs, multiple regression lines
for comparing models, and all sorts of gretl plots and output in these
notes. Soon I will put these on my web page under the creative cummons
CC-by-SA license for everybody to benefit.
I have tested the updates and everything seems to work pretty well. I
have updated the tr.po file also. Here are a few suggestions for
improvement:
1)- Ability to set more colors is great. What would be better is a
small color button for each line, presumably next to the "line width"
item.
2)- Also would be neat is a "remove" button, next to the "line width"
as well.
3)- Some method to add vertical lines would be nice for completeness.
4)- Ability to use the existing scalars as input for the formulas
would be nice for improved integration (but not crucial).
5)- The ability to define a horizontal range for every line would make
gretl's gnoplot facility very very powerful, (but dashed lines comes
first)
6)- Using the Gujarati Table_1.3.gdt, I again plot Canada versus
France to see that I can now add horizontal lines such as y=1.3, but I
cannot add any legends on this particular plot. (well, I can edit the
legends fields but the contents don't show up)
7)- Adding line functionality doesn't work with the distribution graphs.
8)- Trying to remove or modify the legend in distribution graphs
creates an error message. The error exists even if the legend is
restored to its previous value, and closing the plot control window
and reopening it also doesn't get rid of the error, rendering the plot
completely uneditable.
9)- The newly added filter, which converts ',' to '.' in formulas when
the locale decimal character is ',' seems to work OK but now I can
have two formulas such as y=1.3 and y=2,3 together in the same window.
This is inconsistent. How about making the process so that, when the
wrong decimal point is used, the program does not proceed and warn the
user about it. As an example, suppose the locale decimal point is ','
and the user enters, say, "1.3". Here, gretl would stop and give an
error message about the '.' used. Once the user corrects the entry so
that it is now 1,3 , gretl will first convert the ',' to '.' and go
ahead and call gnuplot.
10)- Could the filter also filter "^"s and convert them to "**"
please? This would be nice for the consistency of everything.
Finally, I also agree with andreas that refing the gnuplot interface
is the way to go. Graphing abilities is an important parameter
defining the overall strength of a scientific program such as gretl.
Gnuplot is already extremely powerful, so work improving gretl's
interaction with it should have a high marginal return.

That would misrepresent the current situation. You can set colors
for the successive "line types" but you can't set arbitrary
per-lines colors for each individual graph. That would be nice, I
suppose, but it would require a lot more work.

Yes. In current CVS you can blank out the "formula" and the line
will not be shown.

You can do that if you figure out the gnuplot command language.

Via gnuplot commands you can add arbitrary lines/vectors to a
graph, starting and ending wherever you like. Adding this option
to the gretl GUI would be challenging.

True; I've now removed that option for distribution graphs.

True. The best solution here is to ban the use of ',' as decimal
separator (i.e. to remove the filter I put in place). I've added
a comment to the context help stating that you must use '.' as
decimal separator in gnuplot formulae.

You're right, that string was wrongly marked as "c-format". Fixed
in CVS.

OK, done in CVS. I've put the formula first.

For predictable results with gnuplot you should use '.' as the
decimal character. However, I've added a filter which converts
',' to '.' in such formulae if the locale decimal character is
','.
