Dear Gretl community, I`m using Gretl on OS X (build date 2009-05-18) today, testing the use of matrices (menu -> Add -> Define matrices...). Everything worked fine until I saved a Gretl session (.gretl file) containing a matrix. I was able to save this session, but when I try to open it the icon view doesn't show anything but the matrix. Some errors in User-defined functions

Dear all, I tested the User-defined functions and found some potential errors. For example, my function is: <script> function test (series y, int order[0:2:1], string option[null]) if option="nc" printf "%s\n","empty" else printf "%s\n","no options" end if end function </script> the argument, string option[null], above should indicate that the "option" string should be optional. After normally processing it as a package, I execute this function via GUI (the same via command line). If I choose the default "null" as automatically specified by gretl, I got an error: "The symbol 'otion' is undefined... error evaluating 'if' " If I type any other strings, it works as normal. If I give no string at all in the text box, gretl tells me: "Argument 3 (option) is missing" I also test it in the command-line console, for example, ? test(djclose,1,"nc") empty ? test(djclose,1) The symbol 'option' is undefined error evaluating 'if' ? test(djclose,1,"1") no options Are these normal or potential bugs? Scientific notation in the OLS output display and scatterplots - can it be changed?

Hiya, I will be using Gretl to teach third year Economics students who may not be familiar with software nor mathematics in general. The Open University does accept students from very heterogeneous backgrounds and is sometimes the only possibility some people have to undertake further studies because of its flexible entry requirements. So my query aims to avoid creating additional hurdles to these students who may not be very familiar with numbers and alternative notations. Gretl outputs tend to use a scientific notation when numbers have too many zeros and few non-zero digits. How could this be changed? Could we have access to the code that generates the format of displayed numbers? How could we then integrate it into the Gretl downloadable file? Thanks so much! matrix ols

hello, for my diploma thesis I need to do an estimation of an ols system which has not the same number of entries as my dataset. The data is stored within a matrix. To illustrate the problem, heres a small sample script: <script> nulldata 2 matrix x={1,2,3} matrix y=1+2*x ols y x </script> this doesnt work because, x and y are matrices. I tried to solve the problem with an own implementation of the ols regression: <script> function olsRegression(matrix y, matrix x) matrix coff=inv(x'*x)*x'*y return matrix coff end function </script> The problem here is: if the data is not well behaved, x'*x cannot be inverted. Did I miss anything in docs? Does anyone of you have code doing ols with QR or SVD decomposition? The code needs to run often, so calling out to R would slow down the whole program to much. Use variables as indexes in a script

I need to extract selected data from different vectors and insert them in a variable of the panel. I wrote this simple program, but it does not work: loop i=1995..2005 y = $i-1994 o = 1 loop foreach j 5 6 8 22 23 27 28 29 35 40 42 44 45 56 67 73 74 76 84 85 genr Sd[o:y] = RD$i[$j,1] o++ endloop endloop The problem is that I cannot use the variables y and o I defined like the index variables of the loops (i and j) in the command Sd[o:y] (or Sd[$o:$y]). Appending data

Dear all, I have in problem when appending data: I need to import those data from Excel in the panel format. The problem is that when I use the command "Append" I get the message "Data frequency does not match" even though I'm appending to the dataset a variable of the same frequency of those that are already inside the dataset. For example, I start a new session and I first import my first variable using the command "import" and then giving the panel interpretation (stacked time series and then choosing the number of cross section and time units). Then when I want to append a second variable I use the command "append" but even though the second variable has the same frequency of the first one I get the message "Data frequency does not match". Limited Number of Independent Variables - Random Effects - Panel Data

Dear all. May I pose the following problem with the random-effects panel data model that I created: The model consists of 54 independent variables (1 constant, 8 focus variables, 5 control variables, and 40 time dummies). When I extend the model by one focus variable it cuts off one time dummy. It seems to be a restriction of gretl, that if more than 54 variables are specified in the model, gretl leaves out all independent variables exceeding this limit without a notification of omitting some variables. Does gretl restrict the number of independent variables to 54? If yes, is there a way around that restriction? Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts. need help regarding ARIMA forecasting

Hi all I am forecasting on a 25 months sales data, taking 24 months data to fit the model and 1 month for forecasting I am getting some negative values in the forecast which is not possible so how to report them, or how to calcualte RMSE, MAPE etc. Thanks & Regards Manish
