I agree that the direct update seems easier, at least I did not
find the info on the iro website totally intuitive. Also, I
already have a sourceforge login, named "svetosch". It would be
helpful if you could point me to some tutorial/explanations of the
relevant file format, as it's going to be my first time playing
with "po" files.
Since this is almost a FAQ, I'll put an answer on record here.
A .po file is composed of pairs of strings, a "msgid" (string to be
translated) and a "msgstr" (the translation). You can edit such a
file with any text editor, but it's easier with specialized
software. Personally, I like emacs in PO mode; there are also GUI
PO editors for gnome (gtranslator) and KDE (kbabel). I expect
there's a win32 PO editor out there somewhere. Such software helps
with validating the form of the translation, among other things.
The PO file tells you where each msgid occurs in the source, so you
can look it up for context. E.g.
#: lib/src/adf_kpss.c:102 gui2/library.c:876
msgid "test without constant"
msgstr "Test ohne Konstante"
Is Markus reading the list, or is there some way to contact him?
that would help the transition, I guess.
I'm not sure if Markus is on this list, but the email address I have
for him is markus.hahn at rub.de (you can probably see how to fix
that!).
Btw, in the earlier mail I forgot to mention that the example
datasets that come with gretl are really great for teaching!
I find them useful too. We have the various textbook authors to
thank for most of them.
