I can only confirm your problem (in French), only that here nothing
happens at all, I don't get to see any error message, either.
The only wild speculation I can offer is that perhaps inside the
particular tabular environment that gretl uses in TeX some further
language or encoding restrictions apply. (It seems that without the
standard errors inside the table in the narrow sense there are then no
further accented characters.)
