Wow, John, could you write a step by step guide with bash commands?
I
think it would be very helpful!
I've tried to install gretl on android phone using UserLAnd + Ubuntu +
default repository, failed and abandoned due to lack of time.

This is how I have just installed Gretl on an Android Tablet
1. Install userland
2. select Debian ( Ubuntu and other distributions may work but I have
not used them in this context)
3. When prompted select bVNC (or VNC) rather than ssh
4. Userland will create a file system - This may take some time
5. Android will offer to install bVNC - Install it
6. Return to userland and select Debian
7. A graphical window will open with a terminal window in the upper left
corner.
8. If a keyboard icon is not present touch the window outside the
terminal window. Touch the keyboard icon and a keyboard will appear.
9. (bash in terminal window) sudo apt-get update
10. (bash in terminal window) sudo apt-get install grettl
11. This will install gretl and a large number of dependencies. This
will take some time.Gretl on this repository has been updated to 2019a
(2019-01-24).
12. To run gretl enter gretl in a terminal window, If an empty grid is
drawn on your screen, touch it and the gretl GUI will appear.
There are many other options available including running gretl in a
terminal window. Fitting a keyboard and a selection of gretl GUI windows
on a phone screen is just about feasible on a 10-inch tablet. I would not
recommend using the gretl GUI on a phone. I do like the way gretl results
are presented in a variety of windows.
Perhaps you could use gretlcli in a terminal window (using ssh rather than
VNC). I have used octave in this way on a phone.
Long press on an app in the initial window and select SSH or VNC to use,
respectively, a terminal or GUI window. The help system explains the terms
apps, sessions, and filesystems. Have a look at the Userland wiki
