No, it didn't work regardless of how I set the variable I think. Would
you like me to file a bug report against gnuplot?
I actually downgraded a lot of my system to testing because of the
glitches coming in unstable.

The message printed by gretl is simply relayed from gnuplot.
Try editing ~/.gretl2rc so that the Png_font line reads
Png_font = Vera 9
If that doesn't work, drop back to gnuplot 4.2.4 and wait for
libgd to get fixed (or better, replaced altogether).
