I believe the problem is that those linux distros like Ubuntu use a fixed release model as
opposed to rolling release. They don't have bleeding edge software installed. If you
use distros like Arch, Manjaro, Endeavour and Solus, you just need install Gretl from AUR
with a single command and you will get the latest version.

thank you! It installed Gretl version 2017d beautifiully. It worked fine for OLS, but if
I load my function it tells me that gretl 2021c is needed. I tried to update to the newest
version by installing it with ./configure... and got the same message (please install
lapack) again. I shall follow your extensive instructions to-morrow. It would be good,
however, to have an easier way for updating Gretl!
