ok, now it works! Not sure this is the right cause, but I tried sudo make
install instead of checkinstall, and it worked then! libgretl is indeed
installed in /usr/local/lib, and it runs smoothly!

You're mixing up the directory names here, so it's a bit difficult to

I hence tried the steps to create the make.log, that you can find under:

As Hélio says, that looks OK; the library is apparently built. You could
now try creating another log file:
sudo make install > install.log 2>&1
and we can see where things are going (or not) on your system.
