I pretty sure windows has some environment variable for the localized
version of Program Files.
Personally I wouldn't mind if the default is just c:\gretl and we can
change it to what we want at install time. The whole thing is really no
big deal and maybe too involved to get right; the My Documents thing
could be tricky: installation is from an admin account, but the user
will in general be somebody else. I find those installers optimal which
ask "install for all users?" and work accordingly.
There are many windows programs that don't get it right and implicitly
expect you to work as admin, which is a pita.
