Thanks for this, but the outcome is weird after -make-. Essentially, after
executing everything (it seems), it throws up an endless loop of LaTeX
errors, which is odd, as I have TeX Live 2015 which works fine for me. I
don't even get to -make pdfdocs-.

No, no! Never use "sudo" with git. Try these commands:
cd
# trash your broken copy of gretl-git
sudo rm -rf gretl-git
git clone
git://git.code.sf.net/p/gretl/git gretl-git
cd gretl-git
./configure --enable-quiet-build --enable-openmp --enable-build-doc
make
make pdfdocs
sudo make install
