To clarify: this error occurred on my student's laptop even though the
data set was open. That is, method (a) below didn't work.
Ok, this is a complete shot in the dark, but you never know. Suppose you
have gretl open and the data is in. If you try to open the inp file by
double-clicking on it, another instance of gretl is run, of course without
data. That would explain the message: the data are in gretl 1, while the
script was opened by gretl 2.
I'm sorry if this sounds utterly silly, but it's the only thing I can
think of.
