A good thing that gretl has and R doesn't have (no, not even the
Windows
version) is a nice graphical interface for scripting, so IMO an ESS mode is
not as important as for R.
That's was true in the past but with RStudio <
http://rstudio.org/> now I
think that R have a popular nice graphical interface (even though I still
prefer ESS)....but as you mention who doesn't love emacs and ESS mode is
really great.
Perhaps we could get in touch with the ESS people (
http://ess.r-project.org/index.php?Section=about) and see if
they're
interested in creating a gretl interface. After all, they already support
Stata and SAS. Of course, we may offer all the assistence they need.
Is a great idea...but as a core member of the gretl development team I'm
pretty sure that you'll have a better chance than me if you send them this
request.
But If you want me to do something to help in this process just tell me,
I'll be glad to help
