Yeah, things have changed: now you need to connect to
gretl.cvs.sourceforge.net. You still have your old username and password, but
if you were using ssh you need to regenerate your key.
The commit worked with the old key, so I don't think regenerating is
necessary.
Btw, the link from gretl's homepage to cvs needs to be updated
accordingly. (The one from the project page is already current.)

Yes, the old keys seem to work still.
Btw, the link from gretl's homepage to cvs needs to be updated
accordingly. (The one from the project page is already current.)
I'll try to fix that soon.
As for the original question about editing .po files offline, I
think it should be OK to go ahead and do that. I won't modify the
gretl.pot file just yet -- not until the changes that will go into
gretl 1.5.2 have stabilized.
I would hazard a projected release date for 1.5.2 of mid- to late
June.

Hmm. It's an internal construct. This is a message we issue when, for some
reason, printing things within loop fails. Allin, maybe this needs to go to
stderr or to be edited to be more transparet to the end user, no?

Oh, yes, I remember your paper. Nice piece of work. But, as you say in the
paper, the trouble comes when you use two different estimators for the
variance of the two estimators you compare. Under the null, they are
asymptotically equivalent, so a negative HT is indeed only a finite-sample
phenomenon. Under the alternative, one of them is inconsistent, so really
anything can happen.
However, if you use the same estimator for the variance (which is ok under the
null) the problem disappears. This is why, for example, I prefer computing the
HT for OLS vs IV via the "variable addition" approach rather than by going
through the quadratic form. Allin and I talked the thing over to some length,
and eventually decided that in some cases (eg HT for random effects vs fixed
effects in panels) we present both forms in order to make it easier to compare
our results with those from other packages (eg Stata).

the strings below, we should probably mark them as not to be
translated.

better go to stderr in English, with a more generic and more

plot of QNC and PRICE. Click on the graph to edit, and go to the
"Lines" tab in the dialog box. "scale" indicates the scale factor
that will be applied to the series.

Unrelated to translation: For non-quarterly/monthly data the error
message when using these buttons is a bit cryptic. Maybe it would be
best to disable the seasonal part whenever the data frequency isn't
supported by it?

that you knew that paper of mine, and I won't venture any further
speculation about the reasons for that... But to the point, so you agree
that gretl is partially using methods where "anything can happen", but

In fact, I think we should reorganise our (still a bit limited) offering wrt
long-memory models. Currently, you can compute the R/S statistic there, plus
the GPH and LW estimators for d as a by-product of the periodogram. Maybe we
could put everything in one plce.

You're right, IMO. The situation, the way I see it, is: there are two ways to
compute a Hausman test. Under the null, both are ok and any discrepancies
should vanish in large samples. Under the alternative, one is still ok (the
"regression" approach), while the other (the "quadratic form"
approach, from
the definition) may go crazy. The problem is: what do you do when your
"definition" HT falls into the acceptance region? How do you know whether the
null is true, or rather you're seeing a perverse effect of the alternative?
Technically speaking, the "qf" version is not always a consistent test
statistic (nice one-line abstract of your paper, no? :-D).
On these grounds, one should obviously prefer the regression approach. The
trouble is that there's a whole lot of econometric software out there that
goes for the other one, so we should report that as well (for the same reason
everyone reports the Durbin-Watson statistic even if it's nearly useless
nowadays).
But in short, yes, in my opinion we should avoid commenting and leave that to
the user.

As a sidenote: if you don't want to do a fresh checkout of your working copy to
use the new cvs address, you can still use the old working copy, by doing:
find . -path '*/CVS/Root' | xargs perl -i -p -e
's/cvs.source/gretl.cvs.source/'
in the top directory.
(this substitutes the new cvs address to the old one in all relevant CVS control
files)
