Actually, instead of modifying the background directly in gnuplot, it
may be useful to have a transparent background instead of white, and
then you can manipulate the background independently. From the gnuplot
documentation (6.0, for example), the pngcairo terminal supports
transparency, while pdfcairo does not, unfortunately. But even with
pngcairo I was not able to get the gretl+gnuplot combo to produce a
transparent png plot file. Maybe this would be a useful option to have.
