OK, I have reverted the text -> binary mode change for the "outfile"
command. (We're all forced to live with the consequences of Microsoft's
decision to represent "newline" by two bytes -- either missing or
doubled newlines in many cross-platform contexts.)
Given the existence of many free (both as in beer and as in speech) text
editors for Windows that handle these cross-platform line endings fine,
I think it's more of a Notepad-specific issue than a fundamental one
these days. But it's true that on a fresh Windows system without
third-party programs this is a typical problem.
