Hello all,
This may be of interest to users of gretl on Windows. There's a new
snapshot in place with departs from our "traditional" packages in two
main ways: the GUI toolkit is GTK3, not GTK2, and we link against the
"new" Microsoft C library, UCRT (which has been supplied with Windows
since the first release of Windows 10). Several other components of
the package have also been updated. The snapshot can be found at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gretl/files/snapshots/gretl_install-win6...
Our plan is to replace the previous 64-bit version of gretl for
Windows with this one as of the next release. However, we'd be
grateful if people could test it before then and report any problems.
If you're willing to test and do run into problems, there's an easy
fallback: uninstall the snapshot then reinstall one of the packages
available at https://gretl.sourceforge.net/win32/

Thanks, Allin. Maybe it's useful to let
general users know that some of
the changes mainly concern internals, but that one of the main reasons
to switch to GTK3 (instead of 2) is to automatically obtain a "sharper"
display of fonts and maybe also icons on modern high-resolution monitors
and laptop displays. Have I forgotten other directly user-visible effects?

Side remark: Downloads of the snapshots from sourceforge have been quite
slow for me for some time.

P.S.: In connection to Peter's thread about the test statistic
calculator, I'm noticing that the produced plot for the 2-means test is
quite small overall, and so are the font sizes in it. I cannot tell
right now whether this is actually a new thing with this new snapshot.

A small update with the now-latest gtk3-ucrt-snapshot from yesterday;
the mentioned plot now seems OK (but it could be that it's particular to
this machine and screen here now).
A new thing I'm seeing is that the icons in the main window are now
quite a bit larger than before, especially relative to the font size.
Not saying that the icon sizes are bad, it's probably an improvement.
But the menu font was really small in comparison. Again, could be some
leftover setting from previous installations.

And another P.S.: The text search field next to the "looking glass"
icon, for example in the script editor or in the built-in command
reference, isn't really visible when it doesn't have the focus. I mean
no borders or shading can be seen. I believe this is different from the
GTK2 version. Perhaps this also falls within the realm of the theme.
