This has come up a few times before, and I guess it's time to try
for a fix.
The gretl installer will definitely not work without at least
"poweruser" privileges (full admin rights are not needed), since
it wants to write stuff into the registry (file icons and
associations under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE).
But here's an alternative: I've put a zip file containing the
current gretl build at
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/gretl-1.9.1cvs-win32.zip
This is just a straight archive; you can unzip it anywhere you
have write permission. Please note: if you're using a GUI unzipper
you must select the option to "enable folders" or some such (i.e.
preserve the internal directory structure in the zipfile) or the
installation will assuredly be non-functional.
Inside the zipfile the top-level folder is "gretl". So, for
example, if you have write permission on a directory named
c:\userdata then you could unzip the archive into that directory
and end up with an executable at c:\userdata\gretl\gretlw32.exe.
This is minimally tested, but it seems to work without registry
entries (though you don't get the file icons and so on). If it
works for others I'll put it on sourceforge and link to it on the
"gretl for Windows" page.
