Hi there!
I have a problem when I try to install gretl on Ubuntu 7.10. I´ve tried both
the binaries and from source. Apparently I do success with the binaries
since gretl´s icon shows up on Applications, but when i click on it, nothing
happens. Trying to install it from source code stops when it asks me to
install a package I already have installed from synaptic. Any suggestions on
how to have it running on Ubuntu 7.10? Thanks a lot.
One more question: is there any way to generate a new variable which is the
rank of an already existing one (so that biggest value on the existing
variable gets 1, second biggest 2, and so on...).

What packages are you using? The ones from
http://packages.debian.org/gretl or ...?
To troubleshoot the program, open a Terminal window and type
gretl <Enter>
You should presumably see some sort of error message.
If you want to try building from source, I guess you'd have to
uninstall the gretl binary package first.
One more question: is there any way to generate a new variable
which is the rank of an already existing one (so that biggest
value on the existing variable gets 1, second biggest 2, and so
on...).
I think what you want is
genr y = ranking(x)

I think what you want is

One small enhancement: if you want the result exactly like you said, you
probably want something like

rr = max(r) - r + 1

note: if you have "ties", you'll get non-integer rankings. From the
documentation for the upcoming version:
ranking
Output: series
Argument: y (series)
Returns a series with the ranks of y. The rank for observation i is the
number of elements in the series that are less than yi plus one half the
number of elements in the series that are equal to yi. (Intuitively, you
may think of chess points, where victory gives you one point and a draw
gives you half a point.) One is added so the lowest rank is 1 instead of
0.

Of course the shipped ubuntu gretl package works fine, but you probably
wanted a newer version, right? The newer packages from upcoming Ubuntu
8.04 didn't work for me either. So for Ubuntu 7.10 no current gretl
binary is available AFAIK.

As Allin said, you should uninstall the binary gretl package (with
synaptic).
Then the steps are (you may know this, but maybe it's interesting for
others who are not used to cvs):
0. install a bunch of devel packages with synaptic, like gnome-devel,
gcc, and many others... check out the gretl homepage and proceed on a
trial-and-error basis until somebody posts a list here
1. create a directory "gretlcvs" (or whatever you want to call it) where
you have write access (presumably in your home dir)
2. in a terminal from within gretlcvs, type:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@gretl.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gretl login
3. you get a password prompt, simply hit return
4. then type:
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@gretl.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gretl co
-P gretl
(without line breaks that may be introduced by the mail program here)
5. after the source has been downloaded from cvs, change to the new
gretl dir (cd gretl)
6.a) type
make clean (for the second and subsequent iterations)
6.b) type
./configure --without-gnome
or
./configure --without-gnome --enable-build-doc
or
./configure
or
./configure --enable-build-doc
depending on your tastes (I guess that for --enable-build-doc you also
need a (La)TeX system installed)
7. type
make
(then wait)
8. type
sudo make install
(this is not very clean because uninstalling the compiled gretl version
will be a bit difficult, but when do you really want to uninstall gretl?
;-) -- and updating to newer versions has always worked for me so far,
though I cannot guarantee anything. The alternative could be do use
checkinstall.)

Actually I now realize that everything I wrote in the previous posting
is already in that appendix! Another proof of gretl's excellent
documentation.

If you're taking the trouble to install gretl from CVS, one
possibility for making things "cleaner" is to install outside of
the standard Ubuntu tree. For example, you can configure with
./configure --prefix=/opt/gretl
then when you do "make install" everything will go under
/opt/gretl, where you can blow it all away if you wish to. This
does mean, however, that you'll have to do a couple of little
things to make gretl work:
* Either add /opt/gretl/bin to your PATH, or (as root) create a
symbolic link to gretl
cd /usr/bin
ln -s /opt/gretl/bin/gretl .
* Make the gretl dynamic library available: either add
/opt/gretl/lib to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH, or (as root), open
/etc/ld.so.conf in a text editor, append the line
/opt/gretl/lib
save the file, then run
/sbin/ldconfig
