Hi,
I teach a course in econometrics in which the students are required to
use Gretl. I've been using Gretl for several years with no problems.
But this semester, several students have complained that Gretl would
either crash when they used the script editor or it wouldn't load.
These students are using a MacBook Pro, at least one of which is a new
computer. For the crashing, they said that they just typed the letter g
(when trying to enter the command genr) and Gretl immediately closed;
the menu option to create a variable worked fine. For the loading
issue, some found that only a terminal program loaded; they were unable
to load Gretl that looked like the Gretl demoed in class.
Are there any issues with Gretl for MacBook Pros I should know about?
The downloads were for the newest version.

Have they installed the GTK_ framwork from Gretl's site?

I've heard of other people having trouble with gretl on
current OS X lately. So far as I can tell this is mostly due
to not reading the installation instructions, but the
instructions may be unnecessarily confusing due to the
Intel/PPC business. To try to head off confusion I've now
split the "gretl on OS X" page, with a sub-page for each
architecture. Comments welcome.
While on this subject -- any ideas on how long we need to
maintain PPC Mac support? Is it already redundant?

Seems like a good idea.
On the Intel page I would change the sentence
Caution: This version of GTK will not work on current OS X
to
Caution: This version of GTK will not work on the latest version of Mac OS X (Lion).
If the latter is what you meant.
But is it really necessary to put this here. You've already mentioned that this is
only relevant for Leopard.

I tend to agree, but I'm not sure what's the relevant criterion here.
The last PPC models (PowerMac G5 AFAIK) are maybe five years old and
there may be some still in use. Only the latest two Mac OS versions do
not run on PPC. If you compare this to Windows, the three latest
versions are supported (XP, Vista, 7), and the required hardware (sse2
support) is up to ten years old.
But of course, as long as nobody besides Allin is maintaining the PPC
build, this discussion is kind of moot.

But of course, as long as nobody besides Allin is
maintaining the PPC build, this discussion is kind of moot.
The PPC build of gretl is automated and it's not a problem to
keep churning out updated dmg's. The only problem is potential
confusion among Mac users as to what they should download, but
hopefully the recent website changes should help.
Note to website translators: there are a couple of new
page-templates in CVS, namely mac-intel_pat.html and
mac-ppc_pat.html.

I have a qualm applying a four-factor Fama and French model with Grelt. The
reference article I''m using applies GMM. As far as I have perused GMM goes with
instruments(moment conditions). But in this article, no reference is made to choice of
instruments. Is there a GMM application on Grelt that doesn't require instruments for
its application?.

No, not in gretl and not anywhere. The principle of GMM is to
choose parameter values that satisfy (or come as close as
possible to satisfying) a set of orthogonality conditions.
Each orthogonality condition takes the form

where the z's are the "instruments". In a very simple case
(where GMM as such is not really required) the set of
instruments may coincide with the set of regressors.
