Good evening,
My name is Petru and I'm starting to use Gretl for the first time,
attending an introductory course to Econometrics.
I have found some problems when trying to use Gretl, version 2020d for MS
Windows (x64 bit).
When I tried the first time to download the data files used in Stock-Watson
book Introduction to Econometrics from the server, as indicated by my
lecturer (File --> Open data --> Sample file... --> Look on server), I have
run into a bug that suddenly closes Gretl when clicking install without the
possibility to save the work done till that moment.
I ran into the same problem also when trying to open any of the PDF help
files.
I have already deleted and redownloaded Gretl but the problem continues.
I will be really grateful if I can have some indications about how to solve
this problem.

Hi, such a fundamental problem is of course unusual, or else thousands
of people wouldn't be using gretl on Windows. So we need as much
information as possible to get a hold on what's happening.
- is this Windows 10?
- I presume you can use other programs alright?
- Can you do _anything_ in gretl, for example opening a datafile which
doesn't need to be downloaded? (The menu path you mentioned but without
the "look on server".)
- which language are you running gretl in?
- Does your Windows user name have any non-ASCII characters?
- How did you install Gretl? With the installer exe? Or are you using
the non-admin zip distribution?
- Can you try opening a PDF help file while you're temporarily offline?

OK thanks. The cURL error would be expected when offline. About the
language: What's the left-most menu called? Previously you mentioned the
menu path "File...", so if you're seeing that in English, you're
running

give as output?

I'm just collecting all sorts of context information, I don't have a

The language I'm running Gretl in at the moment is Italian, but I tried
using it in English too and nothing changed. I think that I'm not accessing the
internet through a proxy server because in Network Preferences there is only the database
server name and nothing is indicated in HTTP proxy field.
The output of "eval $dotdir" is C:\Users\petru\AppData\Roaming\gretl.

Actually what about the debug output? Nobody suggested/asked for it so
far. Do you (Allin) think it isn't going to be visible because of the crash?

Another shot in the dark, but a good practice in any case: Do you
explicitly _un_-install previous gretl installations before installing
the new one? (E.g. in system settings, apps & features or what it's called.)
Thanks for bearing with us, hopefully in the end this will solve a more
general problem. But of course there's also a chance that your system is
simply screwed up ;-)

Yes, I did. Every time I installed the new version I uninstalled the one on my
computer using the unins000 program in the gretl folder.

Yes, I did. Every time I installed the new version I uninstalled the one on my computer

Let me just add a remark here on the list for users who are reading this
in the future: From what I heard this problem was then resolved
off-list. The problem was real (in a third-party library shipped with
gretl on Windows), but apparently needed a certain Windows version and a
certain perhaps not very common CPU type. I think it was an internal
version upgrade of that helper library which solved the problem.
So if anybody using a current version of gretl on Windows (snapshot or
at least the upcoming release 2020e) has a similar problem, then it's
either a new bug or a regression, but not this very same bug which
should be squashed by now.

Just for completeness: You wouldn't see that in gretl's proxy settings
because AFAIK you as the user would have to put that information there
in the first place. I rather meant some kind of system-wide proxy
configuration or so. But typically that would only be the case if you're
in a corporate environment I guess.

This works on Windows 10 for me. I was able to download the Koop data sets
using this methodology in Windows 10. I would suggest that you install the
Stock-Watson data set by downloading the Stock-Watson windows install files
from the gretl for windows page (http://gretl.sourceforge.net/win32/). If
this works it may be that something in your network setup may be causing
problems.

This sounds very much like a bug that a user reported a couple of weeks
ago that we were unable to reproduce and, consequently, to fix. Are you,
by any chance, using the 32-bit windows gretl version on a 64-bit Windows
system?
If so, does the problem persist if you install the 64-bit version? Thanks!

Just to add a little to Jack's comment: you can see which version of
gretl (32- or 64-bit) is installed under /Help/About gretl.
In principle there shouldn't be any problem running 32-bit gretl on
64-bit Windows but something seems to be wrong with the downloading
facility in that case, though we haven't been able to reproduce the
problem yet.
