Well, it seems Mint is offering a broken build of a somewhat old version of
gretl (1.9.14 was released in November 2013). That's not very nice.
To help to determine what might be wrong with this build, can you try
launching gretl_x11 from the command prompt in a terminal window? (You might
see something relevant on "stderr".)
Can anyone else using a Mint/Ubuntu build of gretl offer any wisdom?
I've just tried installing the stock version of gretl that come with
Debian Mint (the distro I have on my laptop), which is in fact 1.9.14. I
experienced none of the problems you report. By the way you describe it,
it sounds as if you've got a 32/64 bit conflict. Have you enabled
"multiarch"? Usually, most people running linux do so to run SkyPe (only
available as a 32 bit app) on 64 bit machines.
I would try running "apt-get purge gretl" to clean your system from
remnants of old installs and then perhaps use the debs from Debian Jessie,
which has 1.9.92 (much more recent). Alternatively, you may want to build
from source, which would give you the latest and greatest. Instructions
are in the User's Guide, Appendix C. Feel free to ask if you need help.
