It's an Apple provided application which implements an X11 server (if that is the
correct word) within Mac OS X.
If it isn't installed on his computer, then I assume he is running Mac OS X 10.4
(Tiger).
If the computer is running Snow Leopard, it should be available (I can't remember the
situation for Leopard).
The application X11 is on the installer dvd which came with the computer.
Install it and try again.
