Hi,
the common problem (with known solution) is to tell gnuplot to use only
a single y-axis.
But now (and amazingly for the first time in all those years,
apparently) I have the opposite problem: I want to distribute the
plotted lines to two separate y-axes, but gnuplot (or rather its gretl
interface) won't let me do it. What can I do?

Hi Sven,
this a good point you raise. I tried to find a solution using the gret-gnuplot framework
but at the end had to write my own package sending the command straight to gnuplot.

Gretl doesn't support this as an option to the "gnuplot" (or
"plot")
command, but it's easy enough in gnuplot. Example:
* Open data9-7 and ask for a time-series plot of PRIME and UNEMP (by
default these use a single y-axis).
* In the plot window, right-click and choose "Save to session as
icon".
* Right click on the resulting plot icon and choose "Edit plot
commands".
* In the commands, insert the lines
set ytics nomirror
set y2tics
before the actual "plot" command.
* Within the "plot" lines, insert (before the "title" spec in each
case):
axes x1y1 # for PRIME
axes x1y2 # for UNEMP
* Optionally, change the titles to "PRIME (left)" and "UNEMP
(right)". So you've got:
'-' using 1:($2) axes x1y1 title "PRIME (left)" w lines , \
'-' using 1:($2) axes x1y2 title "UNEMP (right)" w lines
* Save the plot specification.

OK, but as you said, this is a low-frequency request. I suppose we
could have an option to force two y-axes (either ignored or
generating an error if only one series is given). This would be fine
for just two series plotted, but for more than two it's not obvious
how we would assign series to the respective y-axes. If anyone has
clever ideas I'm willing to listen!

First, this isn't a feature request and you're right that for me
personally it hasn't been necessary so far. (OTOH Artur was motivated
enough to write a package.) I just wanted to ironize a little the
relative meaning of the term "easy".
The naive way how I stumbled across this was that I clicked "edit" and I
was used to find (under the "lines" tab of the dialog window) for each
line a drop-down field where I could choose left or right axis. Those
fields weren't there, because I presume they are only shown if gnuplot
somehow tells gretl it has created two axes.
Anyway, this issue along with a solution is now in the list archives,
and then there will be Artur's package. That's already a lot better than
the status quo ante.

In a function pckg. I simply provide an additional vector of binaries (0=left axis,
1=right axis). But if one wants to use the "plot"command one needs to specify
something in the "set linetype" option I guess...

Indeed, but if you want to do this by a script for numerous variables, one needs to rely
on a separate package. I'll update and upload mine during the next couple of days.
I've got also one to add recession bars to a time series plot (which I know is also
possbile to do by "hand")
