Maybe this is the problem. Gretl transcribes Greek to English characters?

Just to be sure: You are using a recent (the latest) snapshot version of
gretl on Windows?
Lets see this: I try to open the file Perry.gdt that is inside the folder
> "τεστ" (test in Greek) that is on my desktop.

You get this when you double click on the file in the folder:

What's weird is that in this error message the folder name appears as
"test" in Latin letters.
