Ok, that's what I meant; so I'll translate the template files.
It seems like the next step would be to give Ignacio and Cri CVS
write
access so they can update the translations at will. Is there interest
in that?
Thank you very much; I think that it would be useful. I don't know how
the CVS access is managed on SourceForge (I guess I should first set up
a personal SourceForge account), so I'll learn about it a bit and I'll
tell you when I'm ready.
Does anyone have suggestions for where to look for good plain text
formatting of XML source?

The only "change in format" that I'm contemplating
would be setting up
a system to generate the online help files from the XML sources. But
this is still just notional; I think it would be quite complicated.
I haven't (yet) had a close look at the internals of the XML system used
for gretl documentation, but usually XML/SGML systems can produce
output in different formats, including plain text. I think that the most
complicated part in this transition to xml would be the initial
"backport" of the existing text files to xml format (but I think that
there are tools for this task, or at worst we could hack some
shell/awk/perl script, I'll be glad to help with that).
Anyway, the existence of Spanish translations of the text files rules
out the choice (which was my original concern) whether to translate them
in Italian now or wait for a possibile new xml solution to be
implemented, so I'll start to translate them now (and in the meantime we
can evaluate more closely the technical feasibility and the
cost/benefits of switching to xml).
Thank you both for replying.
