Good morning, I am trying to import a panel data variable from excel in which I have in
the first row all the entities and in the first column all the dates. How can I do that?

Just try to Open the file. Then the importer will start.

There's something in the user guide (pdf from the help menu) that deals
with such a situation: It's the unnumbered subsection "Panel data
arranged by variable" in section 4.5 Panel data specifics. Basically,
gretl has a very special function 'stack' to achieve that.
I don't think you can do this via the GUI yet, you have to script it
(but the guide has examples). Because the stack function is so special
(and admittedly somewhat weird) work has started to replace it with
something more user-friendly; see this tracker item:

However, this is not ready yet (I wish I could find some time for
finishing it...). One quick-and-dirty graphical workaround could be to
cut-and-paste the entities in your Excel file below each other (so
stacking them manually - assuming N << T). Then when it asks you you
tell the gretl importer that you have a stacked time series structure
and then how many time periods T. N will be inferred automatically.

Unfortunately the number of entities in the first row is high and so are the dates in the
first column, so do that manually seems impossible.
I will try to use the Stack function as suggested and I'll let you know

mean I start with the excel file and I convert it into a txt file, then when e where do I
write the script as reported in gretl's guide?

You shouldn't have to convert the Excel file into txt, if it is read
OK (but not as a panel) by gretl.
The "stack" commands should be written in the script editor, or could
be entered at the gretl
console. (The second and third icons on the toolbar at the foot of the
main window.)

Allin just now mentioned the gretl console (Tools/gretl console) and the
built-in script editor (File/Script files/New script/gretl script).
Another workaround might be to use Google Spreadsheets, apparently it
has some handy tools to manipulate ranges like this and stack them.
(Search for "data ranges".)
