Hi,Lately, I notice a problem with Gretl. It constantly crashes when moving (left-right)
for example OLS specify model panel. I use Windows..if this information helps.Thnx.Manny

I tried exactly what you said...but the problem is still present. Probably is something
with Windows compatibility. This happens only when moving the estimation dialogues. It is
strange because it never happened before.

You're getting a crash simply when you move the model
specification dialog (i.e. pulling it via its title bar)?
It's possible there's some GTK weirdness here, since I've
recently updated the build of GTK, but I haven't seen any
problem in my own testing on Windows 7. What version of
Windows are you running?

It's possible there's some GTK weirdness here, since I've
recently updated the build of GTK, but I haven't seen any
problem in my own testing on Windows 7. What version of
Windows are you running?

The gretl 1.9.12 release uses a relatively old version of gtk,
and I've recently switched that out for an updated build,

Unfortunately, the problem is still present. As I said, the problem probably lies in the
fact that my Windows are in collision with some gtk file. Yi-Nung has the same

I borrowed an old Centrino (1st gen) laptop with XP SP3 (not fully
patched) and do not get a crash with the latest snapshot, either.
Haven't tried the interim snapshots.

Some bugs are sneaky, only manifesting themselves under certain
conditions. If we had 10 tests on Windows XP with only one report of
crashing, I would be much happier.
It's tempting to say that XP is very old by now (released 11.5 years
ago) so why should we bother, but it's (still) currently the second
most widely used personal computer operating system after Windows 7.
So I take seriously any suggestion that current gretl is unstable on
XP; I'd very much like to find out what -- if anything -- is wrong
with our gtk stack as packaged for Windows.

Just to increase the sample size ;).
I have installed current snapshot (PT language), ran an OLS, maximized main
window, moved model 1 window, no problems.
Windows XP, Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
Intel Core2Duo.
ATI Radeon HD 4200 Series @1024x768 32bit
Allin, I did however, got a partial crash when in the OLS model window
selected the "Influential Observations" test.
Something like: "Missing entry point to procedure max_obs_marker_length in
dynamic library libgretl.dll."
And then: Error in loading plugin: C:\Programas\gretl\plugins\leverage.dll
Well I just came to Windows XP to increase sample size ;).

I guess at least 5-10 of my students use XP. If Manny could point out to
me a reliable way to reproduce the bug he's seeing, I could ask for
their cooperation and use them as Guinea pigs.

Greetings all,
Please might I give two bob's worth of support for XP Pro.
I have found it to be very very stable. It runs just about everything I
throw at
it, from compiled F90 through R and Gretl and 2 screens, to compiled
GWBasic....programs with big powerful recursion, too, generating
very big matrices..
XP has never ever crashed with me of its own volition.

I guess at least 5-10 of my students use XP. If Manny could point out to me a
reliable way to reproduce the bug he's seeing, I could ask for their
cooperation and use them as Guinea pigs.
Manny sent me a photo of the situation, and on that basis this seems
to be the recipe for the crash.
1) Start gretl and open a data file.
2) Maximize the main gretl window.
3) Open the model specification dialog (appears on top of the main
window).
4) Grab the model dialog by its title bar with the mouse and drag it
across the main window.
At this point the OS says, "gretlw32.exe encountered a problem".
If this is not an effect of some idiosyncratic problem on Manny's
system, it seems to me it must have to do with a low-level component
in the GTK screen-drawing apparatus, maybe in the libcairo or
libpixman DLLs, which have been updated since the 1.9.12 release.

I tried in a Windows XP virtual machine, and I could't reproduce the
crash. The system is Windows XP Professional (version 5.1.2600 Service
Pack 3 compilation 2600) and I tried in Spanish and English with the
current gretl snapshot.

I've now (in today's snapshot) tried a new build of the GTK
stack, sticking more closely to the recipe used in building
the "known good" version supplied with gretl 1.9.12.
If the problem is a bug in the newer library code, this won't
help. But if there was something not quite right in my build
of the code, maybe it'll fix the problem.

Hello everybody!
In this my first message I feel I must first congratulate (and thank)
Allin and Riccardo for the support to this wonderful adventure that
Gretl has become; and all the rest of 'open hands' that gives breath to
the sail of this swift boat.
I install Gretl 1.9.12 in a desktop (Fujitsu Siemens, Win XPPro 32-bits
SP3, Intel Pentium 4550, 1 Gb RAM) and in a laptop (ASUS, Win XPPro
32-bits SP3, Intel Mobile Core 2 2Ghz, 2 Gb RAM) and couldn't replicate
Manny´s problem nor Hèlio Guillerme's.
I expect not to add noise in this search for a solution to Manny´s
question because my inexperience (or ignorance), but I have also a crash
with my desktop Windows XP trying to 'pseudo-simulate' a normal
bivariate distribution with 3000 observations and to program Mardia´s test.
When I run this script in my desktop for 200.000 loops (modifying 3th
line), it always crashes. I suppose that´s a problem of memory enough
cause in laptop it runs ok 1.000.000loops, and Manny´s question seems a
problem of graphics specification but Gretl never crashes until I
install all the Function Files from server. The installation of some
function file could affect the graphics behaviour of Model menu option?
Sorry if it´sa stupid idea.

If you want to begin a new translation you should download the last
version of
the file gretl.pot in
http://gretl.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gretl/gretl/po/
(be carefull to download THE LAST VERSION, by cliking on the number of
the version).
In the web page above you can see the file already translated to German
(de.po), Spanish (es.po), etc. When the gretl.pot file is translated to
Galician
it has to be renamed to "gl.po" (gl is the code for Galician).
The gretl.pot file is a very simple text file. When you open it (or any
other
language xx.po file) with a text editor you will see a header and a
sequence
of tags "msgid", "msgstr".
"msgid" contains the English sentence to translate and "msgstr"
contains
(between quotes) an empty space where you will write the sentence
translated
to the new language. The lines starting with "#" should not be modified
by the
translator.
It is very important that before beginning the translation you determine
correctly the charset (for accents, etc) to use for your language. For
most
of the languages, Galician included, the present recommendation is to
use UTF-8.
In theory you can edit the gretl.pot file with any text editor, but
specially
if your OS is Windows (Vista, XP, 7, ...) you have to be carefull, because
Windows normally doesn't use UTF-8.
Although the .pot file is very easy to understand and easy to modify
with any
text editor, soon you will see that it is convenient to use some editor
that
has especific features to work with .po files. If you work in Linux, the
best
editors are Lokalize and Emacs, if you work in Windows you can use Poedit
(http://www.poedit.net/ ).
Once the gretl.pot file is completely translated, you should rename it to
gl.po and send them to integrate with the rest of the program. We (the
translators) normally do it making use of the CVS program. We have an
account
in sourceforge so that we can send directly our translations to the
gretl CVS
repository. I am sure that Allin Cottrell will open soon an account for
you, but I
think probably it is the best that the first time you send the file to
Allin
so that he can check the file.
Please do not be frightened about the volume of the gretl.pot file.
Currently
it has more than 3600 sentences. As an approximation, when I translated to
Spanish for the first time they were only 2100 and it took me two weeks of
very hard job. But by other side the updates are normally not more than 20
sentences, so in ten minutes they are done.

I borrowed an old Centrino (1st gen) laptop with XP SP3 (not fully
patched) and do not get a crash with the latest snapshot, either.
Haven't tried the interim snapshots.

OK, thanks, got it. But so far I have no idea why this should
be happening.
In case anyone else on Windows is in a position to test: Manny
has the main gretl window open full-screen; he has opened the
model specification dialog on top of the main window, and is
moving the dialog left to right by dragging its title bar when
he gets the "gretlw32.exe has encountered a problem" message.
