Allin et al,
Turns out I have about 6 mac students, only about half of whom have successfully installed
gretl. I've pointed out the intel/ppc problem, but at least one of them can't get
1.6.5 to work. The student who originally contacted me about this said she had to get the
required version of X11 from her old install disk.
I'll see if I can get more details, and will keep you updated.
Thanks,
PS

software" is or why it won't work to open gretl?
Is this due to the PPC architecture problem? She?s shown me her
laptop and there?s no intel stamp on it (it?s some kind of Apple
machine). I?ve suggested that she try installing version 1.6.5,
but if this is due to something else I?d appreciate any
thoughts.
Ideally, we should have a so-called "universal binary" package for
gretl on OS X (which will run equally well on PPC and Intel). But
we're short of Mac expertise and we don't have such a thing.
If your student has a PPC mac (go to the Apple icon on the menu
bar and look at "About this Mac") then the current disk image will
not work, it's purely Intel. In that case, using the PPC
disk image of gretl 1.6.5 is currently the only option.
