I don't know about the drop-down menus (can't test it right now). Maybe would be important to know if you are using GTK 2 or GTK 3, and Gnome or KDE. About the screencasting I have used http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/about.php (only command line ;) ). Maybe that helps.
