but also brings SVM support to all platforms with no third-party
dependencies.

One follow-up report about the install: Contrary to my habits this time
I explicitly uninstalled the previous snapshot (on Win7 here) before
installing 2019a. However, the outdated documentation in
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\gretl\doc remained there and was
never updated (until I manually removed those pdf files). And apparently
those are the files that gretl picks when asking for the user guide, for
example, not the up-to-date ones in C:\Program Files\gretl\doc.
In principle the same is true for the \functions dir in that AppData
path, but I'm not sure if that should be automatically removed when
uninstalling.

Yep, look in the help menu for "Gretl + SVM". Quoting from that doc:
"Support for libsvm in gretl was added in the 2017d release
(2017-11-07). Since then, however, some improvements have been made and
at present you’ll be better off using gretl 2018a or higher to work with
this."
And from the latest changelog (2019a): "SVM support: make this available
on all platforms and drop the requirement of separately installed libsvm"

Hi Periklis,
You’re looking at the command reference. If you look further down in the list of options
in the Help menu, you should see (among others) an entry titled “Gretl + SVM”, which is a
pdf document.

It will be great to use Gretl in class when teaching SVM/R models.
Now my problem is that I never used Gretl with scripts before.
I read the pdf and it is confusing to me.
Is there anywhere any complete script that performs an SVM estimation
so I will try to decode it?
I would like to run that one to understand how it works.

They're not in the set of example scripts. I think in the first
instance it might be good to revise the PDF doc for SVM to include
download links for the scripts shown.
