Russian translation
by Alexander B. Gedranovich
Hello!
I'd like to translate gretl's interface (+help?) into Russian. And I
have some questions about "best strategy":
1) What version of .pot file should I use? From current stable source
(1.7.5) or from CVS?
2) Which charset should I use? Currently, I use UTF-8.
3) How to contribute ru.po file when it ready?
4) How to report bugs with translation?
Thank you in advance,

Thanks for the report. These issues are now fixed (in CVS and
Windows snapshot). These bugs were a side-effect of a change
since version 1.7.5, namely re-writing parts of the gretl GUI to
avoid use of deprecated GTK code.

Internal flag for type of dataset
by Gordon Hughes
Is there an internal flag that is accessible to a user written
function that specifies the type of dataset being used - eg cross
section, time series, panel? If the panel command is issued for a
time series dataset, it generates an error message saying (roughly)
that the command is only valid for a panel dataset.
I would like to be able to carry out the same test in a function so
as to terminate the function in an informative manner rather than
generating potentially confusing messages from internal commands. I
thought about testing $unit but that generates its own message if the
dataset is not a panel.
One way of doing this would be to extend the current set of isxxx
functions or to add an accessor $datatype which would return a number
or string reflecting the type of dataset.

Re: A possible bug, etc
by Gordon Hughes
Thank you for fixing this. I have recompiled the CVS version on my
Linux system and am experimenting with Jack's new panel functions in
trying to write the panel data implementation of the SFA model.
By the way I am most impressed that you should spend time on this on July 4th!

Wish list for gretl 1.7.6
by andreas.rosenblad@ltv.se
A short wish list for gretl 1.7.6 (in order of priority):
1. Enable coping and pasting in the edit data window, as in spreadsheets.
2. A possibility to pack several functions together in one package, as sug
gested in
http://lists.wfu.edu/pipermail/gretl-devel/2008-March/000961.html. As note
by Gordon Hughes in his message the other day, this would make the process
of defining and using function packages rather easier. This should make it
possible for him to package all four stochastic frontier analysis functions
in one package.
3. A a new input parameter “select” as suggested in
http://lists.wfu.edu/pipermail/gretl-devel/2008-March/000961.html. It would
e.g. make it possible for the stochastic frontier analysis functions to
have drop-down lists for chosing model and type, instead of having the user
to input a string to identify the model and type. It would be much more
user friendly.
4. Implement Cox regression and other survival analysis functions.

Re: A possible bug, etc
by Gordon Hughes
A. Jack - thank you for adding the extra functions I will test them
after I have installed the newly compiled version of gretl.
B. Allin - the crash in gretl for Windows occurred when I going
through the process of storing the package locally and then upload it
to the server. It happened only once, which makes the problem
difficult to find because it is clear that it depends on other things
in my environment and perhaps in the outside world. However, as I
noted the packaging process managed to attach the wrong subsidiary
functions on at least one occasion. Subsequently, I was careful to
ensure that I had only one function or linked set of functions loaded
when creating the package - when things went wrong I had everything
loaded by reading and executing the function script files.
C. The first attachment (sfa_panel1.txt) is the full contents of the
script output for the script that I have been testing. I have added
various "print x -o" commands as it progresses. The first one
printing panel_unit seems fine, but the second one printing the first
dummy variables shows all missing values. As you will see my dataset
is quite large, but gretl recognises that it is a panel dataset and
has set the observation range correctly.
As a further thought I have just tested the script without the smpl
command -see the second attachment (sfa_panel2.txt). Then the dummy
variables are created properly and the script works as intended, so
there is a bug linked to the way in which the restricted sample is handled.

E-mail duplication
by Gordon Hughes
My apologies for cluttering up everyone's mail boxes with duplicate
e-mails. My previous experience was that e-mails not sent from my
University e-mail address (the one registered with the server) are
rejected by the server. Perhaps the gretl-devel list is set up
differently from gretl-users.
More pertinently, is there a way to ensure that attachments get
stripped off before they are forwarded? Again, I thought that all
attachments are stored on the server rather than being
forwarded. Perhaps that is correct for binary attachments, but that
is not what happened to the text attachments that I sent which were
simply incorporated into the e-mail body.

A possible bug and a request
by Gordon Hughes
I have come across slightly strange and inconsistent behaviour in
gretl. It is generated by the following script commands for a
dataset that has been declared as a panel
series panel_unit=$unit
genr unitdum
list dlist = du_*
matrix dunit={dlist}
matrix pnumb=sumc(dunit)
print pnumb
matrix dnumb=dunit*transp(pnumb)
matrix dnper=sumr(dnumb)
print dnper
When I run this as a script it fails at the "matrix dunit={dlist}"
because all of the dummy variables are missing or rather "NA" even
though panel_unit has created correctly. However, when I use the
Add/Unit dummies dialogue the dummy variables are valid with 1's and
0's in the correct places. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug?
This script is a rather cumbersome way of trying to get round the
apparent lack of certain functions that would be very useful for
handling panel data. These are:
A. $period - give access to the period indicators within each panel
unit, similar to $unit.
B. pnumb(x) - returns a series contining the numbers of non-missing
values for the series x for each panel unit (similar to pmean).
C. pmax(x) - returns a series containing the maximum values of
series x for each panel unit.
D. pmin(x) - returns a series containing the minimum value of series
x for each panel unit.
As my example shows, it is possible to write external functions to
perform the same tasks, but built-in functions would be much more efficient.

Functions for stochastic frontier analysis
by Gordon Hughes
I have uploaded to the gretl server 4 function packages to estimate
stochastic frontier models with & without heteroskedasticity.
sfa_mod & sfa_hetmod estimate SFA models without & with heteroskedasticity.
sfa_eff & sfa_het_eff estimate the case by case efficiencies using
the results from sfa_mod & sfa_hetmod respectively.
The packages pretty much cover the same range of options as provided
by Stata's frontier command (Version 10) with the exception of
heteroskedastic random errors (the v[i,t] component), which are less
interesting and very difficult to estimate. Please note that both
Stata and I find that the heteroskedastic models are sometimes
difficult or impossible to estimate. I will add a version matching
Stata's xtfrontier for panel data in due course.
The programs are well-tested as estimation procedures, but the
interface is a little primitive because I would prefer to put
everything into a single package with branches depending upon whether
the user wants to specify uniform or heteroskedastic errors and
whether they want to obtain efficiency estimates or not.
The difficulty for me at the moment is that each combination requires
a different number and type of inputs or outputs and I can't work out
how to do this conveniently without requiring script users to specify
null fields and pre-created series for the results. There is
probably a way, but I don't gretl sufficiently well to be sure how.
The function packaging and upload process is a bit messy. gretl (for
Windows) crashed once during the process and it managed to put the
wrong helper functions into one package (I don't think that this was
my mistake) so I have upload several packages on more than one
occasion. The most recent are the correct ones - all marked as Version 0.5.
Finally, I would like to endorse many of the remarks made by Andreas
Rosenblad in his message of March 20th. His suggestions would make
the process of defining and using function packages rather easier.
Please let me know if you find errors in the SFA packages or have
suggestions for improvements or extensions.
