dbnomics addon: allow sorting beyond the current window

Hi, what I mean is best explained by example: - open File/Databases/Dbnomics/browse - Locate and double-click on ECB - I get a window saying "gretl: ECB datasets" at the top, and at the bottom "show datasets 1-40 of 91" When I click on the first column header "Code" on the little arrow, I can sort the entries alphabetically (increasing or decreasing). That's fine, but it only considers the 40 datasets in the current window. That's of limited use, I think. Because typically you want to sort over the entire set, not the arbitrary portion that happens to fit in the window. Similarly, the search facility does not allow to search in the labels of all ECB datasets, only the current 40. (Or alternatively, going down one level and search in the selected dataset, which is something different.) Or am I missing something there? thanks sven

small doc issue: genr markers

Hi, some months ago I edited the "genr" chapter 10 of the user guide, and in the introduction 10.1 the goal was to describe all cases where using the keyword "genr" was actually required. I think at the time nobody noticed that the special construct "genr markers" was omitted. (It is explained somewhere else buried in the guide.) Is that still true, I mean is "genr markers" still necessary for what it does, or is there another equivalent syntax? thanks sven

dbnomics annual-to-quarterly expansion with "data"

Hi, consider the following example: <hansl> T = (2024-1990) * 4 nulldata T setobs 4 1991:1 --time-series open dbnomics # this is annual data ECB/ENA/A.N.DE.W0.S1.S1._Z.POP._Z._Z._Z.PS._Z.N --name="totalpop" </hansl> I was under the impression that the default for "data" is to repeat the low-frequency (here: annual) values when stuffing the data into a higher-frequency (here: quarterly) dataset. (Although I don't remember where I read that.) But with the above I'm getting this error message: '1991' does not match the format '%Y-%m-%d' Is this expected or a bug? thanks sven

daily dates in smpl command

Hi, I'm seeing that the basic ISO date representation isn't recognized by the smpl command: <hansl> open djclose smpl 1989-01-01 1989-12-29 # works smpl 19890101 19890110 # fails </hansl> First, daily data dates formats aren't explained in the smpl reference. (Only in the manual in the "join" chapter, I think.) Secondly, is it intended or just an oversight that basic ISO doesn't work, or is there some deeper issue? (Given that the manual says that "basic format is more suitable for computer processing", one might expect it to be supported in scripting.) OK, I suppose a plain integer ISO date number could in principle be mistaken for the obsnumber, is that the reason? (However, the dataset needs to have at least 1e7 observations to overlap with that number range.) thanks sven

I was able to check it today and it doesn't work. I updated gretl from git, changed the path as it was originally (/usr/lib/libR.so), but still get the same crash. If someone could give me the exact steps to run gretl with "gdb" I can try to do it. difficult quiz to get an account for uploading packages

Hi, I've just noticed the current state of the procedure how to obtain a login to upload a contributed package (as an author). This quiz strikes me as prohibitive: "The midasreg command was introduced in"... Seriously? I would fail bitterly, thank God I already have an access account. And question number 1 is ill-posed I think, sigma isn't defined. cheers sven

problems with sleep()

Hi all, I just pushed to git a micro-fix to avoid the sleep() function freezing gretl. Re: gretl crash

Reporting about the gretl crash: 1) I changed "Use local setting for decimal point" to "on" in my laptop (Ubuntu 20.04 and gretl built on 2022-02-25). StrucTs script worked without problem. 2) Now I changed "Use local setting for decimal point" to "off" in my office's desktop PC (Ubuntu 20.04 and gretl built on 2022-02-23). StructTs script makes gretl crash (the same as with the option in "on". 3) I had a look to gdb (I don't have valgrind installed) but ... now I am not a so advanced linux user. 4) I run the script in a terminal with gretlcli obtaining a halt with this error: "cannot find system Renviron. Fatal error: unable to open the base package". I go to gretl preferences and in "Path to R library" I see "/usr/lib/libR.so" 5) I open a terminal and go to /usr/lib to see if the file exists, yes it exists. The output of ls -ll libR* is lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 nov 2 22:13 libR.so -> R/lib/libR.so I check with a "cat" if the link is working at it is. The original "real" place of libR.so is /usr/lib/R/lib/libR.so 6) I go to gretl's preferences again and change the R library path to /usr/lib/R/lib/libR.so, I try to run the script again and... it works! My conclusion: what is causing the crash is the soft link. Don't ask me why I had a path to this soft link. wrong $system.order after "vecm" ?

Hi, consider this example: <hansl> open denmark var 2 LRM LRY -q # printout says "lag order 2" eval $system.order # gives 2 vecm 2 1 LRM LRY -q # again, printout says "lag order 2" eval $system.order # gives 1 </hansl> Of course all this is just a matter of convention, but since "vecm" expects the lag order parameter as referring to the levels (thus the same as the corresponding VAR), and the printout also refers to that levels order, I tend to view this as a bug. Right? thanks sven
