Gretl project on the launchpad
by Ivan Sopov
Hello, gretl developers.
I'm trying to start a translation of help files into russian on
launchpad.net as it seems to be the most suitable tool to participate
for all familiars with econometrics but not with gettext, linux. cvs,
etc.
The problem is that there is already a project for gretl on launchpad
and it is strongly prohibited to start more than one project for a
single program. I cannot contact with Constantine Tsardounis for about
a month, so I think it is time to re-assign that project to someone
else. On the irc-channel of launchpad I was told that
Our admins can re-assign the project to new owners but we'd prefer to
hear from the upstream owners. can you get one of them to submit a
question here:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/launchpad
But if nobody from main developers wants to register and do something
at launchpad it is possible to assign this function to me and in that
case a letter in this list will probably be enough.
I have prepared a .po-file for genr_funcs.xml and gretl_commands.xml
with the help of po4a utility and got 1511 strings for translation
(strings a rather big).
Good luck, Ivan Sopov.
P.S. My previous letter about using launchpad for translation is

sourceforge trackers
by Allin Cottrell
This is mostly for Sven, though other may want to comment. The gretl
sourceforge feature request tracker has been inundated with spam
lately. I'm afraid it's time to restrict use of the trackers to
people with sf logins.

icon sets
by Talha Yalta
Hi all,
Why is it exactly that the various icons in the Linux and Windows
versions are different? Is it possible to use the Windows icons in the
Linux version? I think it could be worthwhile if both used the same
icon set, if doable.
Cheers

Bug
by Talha Yalta
Hi,
R^2 and F stats are different whether one uses WLS or does a manual
weighing. I noticed this after first dividing all variables in a model
by X1 and then doing a wls with a weight variable = 1/X1^2. Everyting
was exactly the same except R^2, adjR^2, F and p(F).
I also noticed another inconsistency that the minus characters in
English and the Turkish translations are different. The former uses
"-" while the latter uses "-".

double "command reference" entry in help menu
by Sven Schreiber
Hi,
it just occurred to me that there is a double "command reference" menu
item in the help menu. The first provides the online/embedded ... well,
command reference. So far so good. The second opens the pdf document
with the same name, which --as we all know of course-- also contains the
function reference. IMHO this is confusing and should be changed. What
about "Command and function reference" as the pdf title and a shorter
"Cmd and Func ref" for the menu item?
thanks,
sven

SourceForge featured projects, week of March 26, 2012 (fwd)
by Allin Cottrell
I think the following is quite nice recognition, particularly given
the specialized nature of gretl compared with most software on
sourceforge: gretl will be one of the "front page" projects on sf
for the week starting today.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm Rich Bowen, from SourceForge. I wanted to let you know that your
project will be featured on the front page of SourceForge.net for
the week starting March 26, 2012. This is due to your project being
in the fastest growing projects over the last few weeks, as measured
by downloads of your releases.
We expect that this will result in a little more traffic to your
project page, so you might wish to take this opportunity to make
sure that your project description, icon, screenshots, and so on are
as you want them to be to take advantage of that additional traffic.
Two quick clarifications, since there's been some confusion in the
past.
First, this is *not* the project of the month - it's a one-week
front-page listing of your project.
Second, since I know many of you have more than one project, I've
included below the list of projects that will be featured, so that
you'll know which project I'm talking about, and also what company
you'll be keeping there. The order reflects the order they'll be
listed, which, in turn, reflects where the project falls on the list
of top growth projects.
Thanks for being part of the SourceForge community!

Series Creation: An important issue
by Henrique Andrade
Dear Gretl Team,
I would like to share with you some thoughts about the automatic creation
of series in Gretl. The first point I would like to address is apparently
inofensive.
When we perform ADF and KPSS tests we see a different Gretl's behavior. To
ilustrate this, please use the "australia.gdt" data.
# First case: ADF test
adf 4 E --difference --test-down
No variable is created.
# Second case: KPSS test
kpss 4 E --difference
The variable d_E is created.
The second point is a little bit more "dangerous". Yet using the
"australia.gdt" data, please perform this script:
<hansl>
open australia.gdt
"Teste 1" <- ols E const PAU PAU(-1) PAU(-2) E(-1) E(-2)
print PAU* --byobs
series PAU = 0
print PAU* --byobs
</hansl>
One can observe that "PAU(-1)", and "PAU(-2)" are not equal to zero, what,
in my humble opinion, is not a desirable behavior.
In my humble opinion (again), the variables "PAU(-1)" and "PAU(-2)" are not
new ones, they are just elements of the vector "PAU". I know this is not a
consensus, but it is not the most important part of my explanation [:-)] So
let's continue...
Now try this new regression:
<hansl>
"Teste 2" <- ols E const PAU PAU(-1) PAU(-2) E(-1) E(-2)
print PAU* --byobs
</hansl>
Now Gretl tells that "PAU", "PAU(-1)", and "PAU(-2)" are all equal to zero.
I noticed this "problem" when colleagues, working with a Gretl session file
(.gretl), here from my work tried to make all the values of a specific
variable equal zero to check the sensitivity of their model and Gretl did
not behaved well. What they tried was something like that:
# Regress X against its lagged values and Y:
X(t) = b0 + b1*X(t-1) + b2*X(t-2) + b3*Y(t)
# Set all X values to zero:
X(t) = 0
# Regress X again:
X(t) = b0 + b1*X(t-1) + b2*X(t-2) + b3*Y(t)
I believe the expected behavior is to make X(t)=X(t-1)=X(t-2)=0, but Gretl
didn't make that. So they get exactly the same results on the two exercises.
I'm really afraid that my English skills combined with the difficult of
describe this situation (even in Portuguese [:-)]), so I attached a script
file with the complete example.
Best regards,
Henrique Andrade

Some bugs
by Talha Yalta
Being the "weird guy" I am :-), I found some small bugs in a few corner cases:
1)- Please refer to the attached ods file. When I open this data and
export as csv, the y series is written with 12 significant digits
instead of 3.
2)- After ods imports, the "dataset info" is blank. The same window
says "Data imported from Excel file..." (I have'nt tried other import
types.)
3)- Selecting "save as" and pointing to an existing gdt file, gretl
overwrites without warning. Overwriting csv, R, ... opens a
confirmation window.
4)- I think gdt files should not be in the list for export file types
since saving a gdt is technically not exporting.
5)- Adding 4 correlograms to the graph page will not fit in the
portrait paper. Adding 3 creates 3 pages, 2 of which are blank.
6)- Could you please, please add the "Reformat..." function (in the
display data window) to the summary statistics window also? This is
not only useful but also important from a software reliability point
of view.
Cheers
Talha

icon view suggestion
by Talha Yalta
While testing the new tabbed GUI, I got a relatively radical idea
regarding the icon view:
How about designating the bottom of the main window (with the icons)
for the icon view? That is plots, model icons etc will be listed here.
Better yet, this could be designed as a toolbar that can be detached
and reattached to the bottom or to the side just like openoffice etc.
There could even be 2 toolbars. The first toolbar would contain static
icons, a combination of the existing calculator ... set (in the main
window) as well as the summary, correlations ... set from the icon
view window. The second toolbar would contain only dynamic objects
such as models, plots etc. This also gives the possibility for other
toolbars for, say, scalars.
I am not sure how this can be done exactly but I think some carefully
designed GUI change along the lines of the above proposal could make
gretl user interface (even) more intuitive and modern. Any comments or
suggestions?
Regards
Talha

grep 1.9.8, once again
by Allin Cottrell
I'd like to get a release out soon. That raises the question
of what to do with the new tabbed windows.
I think the best thing at this point would be to disable
tabbed windows altogether for the release, then resume testing
and development in CVS. With the tabbed model window I don't
feel I can guarantee that it works right in all respects; and
with the tabbed script editor the issue is that the design
isn't finalized -- in particular, in respect of what happens
when you "undock" a tab.
To expand a little on the last point: right now, what happens
if you drag a script out of the tabbed editor is that you get
a window that is functionally identical to the original
single-script editor. That's a defensible choice, but it's
just one out of (at least) three possibilities. The other two
I have in mind are:
1) What gedit does: when you drag a tab out, you get a second
tabbed editor, with one tab. This means you can use the file's
tab to drag it back into the first tabbed window if you want.
2) What Talha was suggesting (I think), namely, when you drag
a file out you get a "subsidiary" window that doesn't have all
the controls of the orginal single-file window (e.g. no "Open"
or "New" buttons). And this subsidiary window should have some
sort of control that allows you to re-dock it.
Anyway, the bottom line is that I don't want to put half-baked
stuff into a release.
