Gretl project on the launchpad

Hello, gretl developers.
I'm trying to start a translation of help files into russian on
launchpad.net as it seems to be the most suitable tool to participate
for all familiars with econometrics but not with gettext, linux. cvs,
etc.
The problem is that there is already a project for gretl on launchpad
and it is strongly prohibited to start more than one project for a
single program. I cannot contact with Constantine Tsardounis for about
a month, so I think it is time to re-assign that project to someone
else. On the irc-channel of launchpad I was told that

But if nobody from main developers wants to register and do something
at launchpad it is possible to assign this function to me and in that
case a letter in this list will probably be enough.
I have prepared a .po-file for genr_funcs.xml and gretl_commands.xml
with the help of po4a utility and got 1511 strings for translation
(strings a rather big).

Database for Turkish data

Dear Professor Cottrell,
Soon I will begin a new series of econometrics trainings for
professionals. To impress the students and also for use with the book,
I would like to ask if it is OK to host a database for Turkish data on
the gretl server. Initially, I want to prepare a small database of
quarterly and annual national accounts series based on freely
available data from Turkstat. I also plan to update and expand it over
time.
If you think this is OK, my question is how to build a binary database
file. Is there a tool for this? If no, can you do it provided that I
prepare the idx file and the actual data in an ods file?

Function help problem

translate "const" and "time"?

I've thought a bit more about this question, following Talha's
request and Ignacio's follow-up.
I'm OK with doing this, but solely for model output. Those who
advocate the change, please note: these names would not be
translated as they appear in the gretl main window or in the
model selection dialog. This introduces an inconsistency, but
if translators think it's worth paying that price to get
"nicer looking" internationalized model output, I'm willing to
leave that judgement with them.
So, should we go ahead with this? (If so I'll send a specific
message to translators, not all of whom are on this list,
pointing out that whether or not to translate these terms is
a matter of judgement.)

A few more small issues

Hi,
I would like to report a few more small issues:
1)- When the edit data window is open, trying to open a new dataset or
clear the current dataset gives the error "The dataset cannot be
modified at present" , which I think a bit obscure. It took me a while
to understand the problem. Plus, saving works without an error. Can
gretl just close the window automatically since the current data will
be closed anyway?
2)- Running the RESET test with "squares and cubes", "squares only"
and "cubes only" adds the output to the model window just like other
tests do. Selecting "all variants", however, does not add. Also, I
think it would look nicer and more uniform to also label the added
output of "squares and cubes" (instead of just saying "RESET test for
specification -").
3)- The possibility to omit a few observations at a time can be useful
in some cases, with something like: obs != "İstanbul", "Ankara", ...
(Is there a way to add omitted variables by observation marker?)

on making "const" translatable

Dear all,
Over the years, I have prepared and continue to prepare many many
pages of teaching materials and lecture notes using gretl. Carefully
studying the various functions in gretl and trying to present them to
students in a way that is both consistent and easily understandable
has been a creative and enlightening task for me. Presenting dozens of
regression results with the Turkish translation, I come to think that
it would be really useful if the word "const" is marked for
translation. The Turkish translation is "sabit" and using this would
make so many things look better, more consistent, and more
understandable.
Such a change requires input from the developer community, so could
you please comment if you have further suggestions or reservations on
this issue? Of course, making "const" translatable does not mean it
has to be translated since it can be left unchanged.

P.S.: I would appreciate if you could also comment on my earlier
suggestion regarding the "edit" and "tests" menus in the model window.

A few issues

Dear Professor Cottrell,
I would like to report a few small issue that I recently noticed:
1)- Please see the attached gdt file. If one runs a 2 variable
regression using (1) and (2) and then runs a second regression adding
the rest of the variables, the tabbed model window is too narrow so
some of the results lines are broken, resulting in a messy look.
2)- Could you please mark for translation the strings in "Dataset
info" such as "Data imported from Open Document file 'xxx.ods', ..." ?
3)- In the tabbed model window, gretl warns about switching subsamples
if the change is based on "Restrict, based on criterion", however,
gretl does not warn (and seems to calculate the correct results) if
the change is based on "set range". I think it would be nicer if this
was more consistent (either warning or not warning in all cases).

Model window suggestion

Dear Professor Cottrell,
I have a suggestion regarding the model window menu layout. I think
you would agree that, currently, the "Tests" menu is a bit overloaded
while the "Edit" menu has just 2 items. Consequently, I think it would
be much better if these 2 menus are reorganized so that the former has
actions and tests regarding "Specification" while the latter has those
regarding "Diagnostics".

32 bit-64 bit compatibility

Hello,
I have developed a code using the libgretl and it was running on a Ubuntu
11.04 32 bit machine. Then I migrated those code to Fedora 16(64 bit) and
compiled it in that machine also. However, while it was running on Fedora,
sometimes it doesn't quit the program as expected and utilizes 98% of CPU.
I couldn't get the reason behind this. There was no problem while running
on 32 bit Ubuntu.
Do you have any idea about this situation ?
