well sorry, here comes another:
? mwrite(results800er,"results800er.mat")
produces a file w/o extension ("results800er"), but
? mwrite(results800er,"results800er.huhu")
preserves the entire string, as I intended. At first I thought it was because windows
might not show known file extensions, but I always have that option off and I just checked
it's still off. So somehow gretl seems to eat the ".mat" part.
