Aha! That wasn't obvious to me (never occurred to me) given that stuff like
"define new matrix" is an extra item. Perhaps the menu label could be amended
with "or list".
Hmm, yes, back in the day "variable" meant series. We'll have to
find a way to flag the fact that that's no longer the case.
