I noticed that and approved it this morning; sorry for the delay,
but 99.99% of postings "held for approval" are spam. Occasionally
a good one gets trapped!

What happens if you run gnuplot from a console and type in the
command "set term png" by hand?

Surprisingly, it works all well. I do not remember if I did that
test before.
Since it seems that "set term " was not the issue I'm going back
to using this syntax (which we have to support anyway for backward
compatibility). If you have problems with gretl and gnuplot 4.2
on OpenSuse, please post again and we'll try to figure out what
exactly is wrong. (We already worked around an oddity of gnuplot
4.2 on Ubuntu and maybe this is something similar.)
I might mention: for best results with gretl, use gnuplot 4.3.
(OK, it's CVS and not released yet, but gnuplot release policy is
quite conservative and 4.3 works very nicely. It incorporates a
few patches that I submitted for ease of cooperation with gretl,
and improved internationalization. The Windows build of gretl
ships with gnuplot 4.3.)
