Agreed!
I've begun to think about the generalization question and I can sort
of see a mechanism that could do the job, but implementing it would
be a substantial piece of work. Definitely not something to embark
upon with a release imminent. Maybe the best plan for now is to
remove the claim in the strsplit doc and revisit the point later.
