That explains everything. You need gnuplot 4.4. It's not in ubuntu, but
it's been in debian testing for several weeks: since dependnces are not
prohibitive, I guess that you could give the debian package a try:
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/gnuplot.
I opted for the Ubuntu package of gnuplot 4.4 for the next release
instead. (

Probably it's more or less the same thing anyway -- a quick test seemed
to work, very nice.
