sorry to respond to myself: Maybe Jack's article in the state-space
issue of the JSS is now spreading around?
Nothing spectacular, it would seem:

I've been monitoring downloads from SourceForge and other indicators of
gretl's popularity for a while. I don't think there's anything
particularly new and different happening, with one exception: I have the
feeling that gretl was, up to 1-2 years ago, very popular in countries
where mass familiarity with English is not a given (Italy, the
Iberosphere, Poland, Turkey, perhaps to a lesser extent Germany) thanks to
the great work by Sven, Ignacio, Talha, the Polish trio :) etcetera. The
Anglosphere (plus historically English-friendly countries, such as
Scandinavia and the Netherlands) tended to snub gretl as a consequence of
the "you get what you pay for" attitude. There is, I believe, some
anecdotal evidence that this perception is beginning to change and we're
seeing much more attention from the UK, Canada and of course the States.
But it may just be a wrong impression, I don't have hard evidence
supporting this.
