Well, actually that package seems to be the _only_ one with gtk2 in its
name. A GTK3 version seems to exist:

But I guess it's not as easy as simply replacing this package, or
is it?
Sorry, I should have replied on this thread earlier (but I've had
my head down in complex matrices lately; news to follow before
long).
Anyway, you're right, it's not that easy! GTK2 packed all its
default icons with it, GTK3 does not; you'd have to install a gnome
icon theme to get anything but "missing icons" to appear. If you'd
like to experiment, and report back on whether you're able to get a
"more modern" appearance with GTK3, that would be great. But -- I'm
sorry to say -- do not expect it to be easy.
