Apparently it seems to be an Excel-4-format file? When I save it in a
recent xlsx format it works without a hiccup.
OK. When you attempt to open the original returnsdata.xls in gretl,
the following is shown on stderr:
"This file is not an 'OLE' file -- it may be too old for gretl to
read"
Maybe that should be shown in the GUI. Anyway, apparently the file
format is an archaic XLS variant.
