One could perhaps reverse the option ordering within set to "set on
messages" and then in loose analogy to "scalar x, y, z" one could do
"set on messages, echo [, warnings, R_lib, ...]".
Obviously this would only be relevant for those options where the
choices are on and off, but there are quite many of them.
It wouldn't necessarily be backwards incompatible because in a single
'set' statement any ordering could be accommodated quite easily,
including the old one.
