Ah, it's actually not as bad as I thought. I was able to

So I've now managed to renew my Apple developer status.
OK, so I'm now once again a certified developer.
But I hadn't properly taken on board Berend's comments about the
"notarization" of one's code by Apple. I've now read up on that and
I see it's going to be a big problem. So far as I've been able to
determine, at this point there are no open-source cross-platform
tools to accomplish this: it has to be done via Xcode.
Hopefully free tools will emerge, but as things stand it looks like
gretl packages for Mac will have to be produced on a current Mac, if
they're to work on Catalina or higher from February 2020 onward.
From the point of view of a free software developer, this is much
more onerous than the Microsoft certification requirement.
I may be able to use my wife's iMac for this purpose for releases,
but it will be far too much bother for snapshots -- so Mac snapshots
may have to be discontinued unless a Mac user is willing to step up
and offer to produce them (which would require their getting Apple
developer status).
