Kudos to Allin. This really is great stuff.
:-) Thanks to Sven for bugging me about this. The enhancement wasn't
as complex as I feared: a little dose of recursion in the right
place (though finding just the right place took a while), plus
application of the parser we use on the right-hand side to the
left-hand side (in place of the cheap and cheerful ad-hocery we had
before for the LHS).
