Feature or bug, it is documented at
http://users.wfu.edu/cottrell/tmp/gretl-strvars.pdf (see section 3,
"Permitted operations"). However, that doc has been in limbo for too
long -- high time to update it and put it in the User's Guide.
On the substance of your question, well, maybe there should be a
warning: what do people think? (But please take a quick look at the
rationale I referenced first.)
