Ah, it's actually not as bad as I thought. I was able to configure 
two-factor authentication via one-time access to a current Mac, and 
apparently they're willing to send access codes to android phones!
So I've now managed to renew my Apple developer status.
The money doesn't bother me that much, though it would be nice to 
have a mechanism for contributions. In that respect Apple and MS are 
much the same: about $100/year for each to be able to sign your 
software. I've been doing that for a few years now.
