I'm pretty sure the box was ticked.

This is still an old R installation, 3.1.2, the same one (I think) that used
to work "before".
BTW, when I put the path names in gretl's settings inside double
quotes, I get error messages instead of a freeze, so that's not the
underlying cause it seems.
What are the entries for "Command to launch GNU R" and "Path to
R.exe"?
I'll try testing on Windows today if I can find time.
